UL 325 is the US safety standard for gate operators. Since 2016, new operators must be monitored for entrapment protection, which means the gate will not run if a safety device is missing or failed.
What a compliant gate has
- Photo-eye sensors on both sides of the gate path
- Contact edges on leading edges where pinch points exist
- An operator that monitors those devices
- Warning signs on both sides
- Pedestrian traffic separated from vehicle gates
Older gates
Many HOA and apartment gates installed before 2016 have no monitored safety devices. Upgrading usually costs a few hundred dollars per gate — far less than a single injury claim.
