  • 9 Warning Signs Your Walk-in Cooler Is About to Fail

Walk-in coolers rarely die without warning. In most of the emergency calls refrigeration companies tell us about, the kitchen team had noticed something odd days earlier. Here is what to watch for, and what each sign usually means.

    The warning signs

    1. The temperature creeps up during busy service — often dirty condenser coils or low refrigerant.
    2. Ice building up on the evaporator — a defrost heater, timer or drain line problem.
    3. Water pooling on the floor — a blocked or frozen condensate drain.
    4. The compressor runs non-stop — the system is struggling to reach set point.
    5. Loud rattling or grinding fans — worn fan motor bearings.
    6. Sweating walls or door frame — failing door gaskets or heater wires.
    7. The door does not close by itself — sagging hinges or worn closers let warm air in.
    8. Higher energy bills without more use.
    9. Food spoiling faster than usual, even inside its date.

[rp_callout type=”warning” title=”Above 41°F for more than 4 hours?”]Most health codes treat cold food held above 41°F (5°C) for four hours as unsafe. Move product to another unit and call for emergency service.[/rp_callout]

    Maintenance that prevents most failures

Quarterly coil cleaning, monthly gasket checks and a daily temperature log prevent the majority of breakdowns. Many refrigeration companies bundle these into a maintenance plan for less than the cost of one emergency visit per year.
